A gentle late-summer’s day for a long row at the Great Ouse Marathon

Heather Lizamore & Michelle Hurd (Women's Masters C), Tom Bryant and Brendan Flynn (Men's Masters C). Both crews won in their categories.

Crews participating in the 2023 Great Ouse Marathon were greeted by a perfect late summer’s day with gentle winds and warm sun. This 22km race sets off from the West Norfolk Rowing Club to finish at the Isle of Ely Rowing Club, which organises the event.

Sudbury Rowing Club fielded 4 Masters’ Doubles Crews and two adaptive single rowers, achieving wins in:

  • Women’s Masters’ Double (Category E) – Theresa Moriarty & Tracy Muir in a time of 1:58.48
  • Women’s Masters’ Double (Category C) – Heather Lizamore & Michelle Hurd, in their very first sculling event together, coming in at 1:43.29
  • Men’s Masters’ Double (Category B) – Brendan Flynn and last-minute sub, Tom Bryant, in an impressive 1:36.23

Well done to our adaptive rowers, Luke Payne, Sophie Brown and also to Sean Moriarty, rowing with Jeremy Milbank, who also had good rows.

Instead of the customary pots, winners were awarded young native trees and invited to plant these at home or at their clubs as a reminder of the event for years to come.
